Google Is Not Enough: Why Your Business Needs to Show Up in AI Search by 2026

For years, local SEO meant one thing: rank on Google, get found, get customers. That formula still works, but it is no longer the full picture. A massive shift is underway in how consumers search for products and services, and most businesses have not yet caught up.

According to a 2025 Capgemini report, 58 percent of consumers have replaced traditional search engines with AI tools for product and service recommendations. That number was just 25 percent in 2023. The tools driving this shift include ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, and a growing list of AI assistants that generate direct answers instead of ranked links. Meanwhile, AI referral traffic surged by 527 percent compared to the first five months of 2025 to the same period in 2024 (Search Engine Land).

The way people find local businesses is changing fast. If your business only shows up on Google, you are already falling behind.

What Is LLM SEO and Why Should You Care?

LLM SEO — sometimes called Generative Engine Optimization or AI Search Optimization — is the practice of optimizing your business and content to appear in responses generated by large language models. Unlike traditional search, where Google shows a list of ranked links, AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude generate direct answers and recommendations in a conversational format.

When someone asks an AI assistant, “What is the best window installer in the Bay Area?” or “find me a kitchen remodeling contractor near me,” the AI does not show ten blue links. It gives a direct recommendation, often citing specific businesses by name. If your business is not part of that recommendation, your competitor is.

This is not a future problem. It is happening right now. A Previsible study analyzing nearly 2 million LLM sessions found that 59 percent of prompts with local intent trigger a live web search, and 53.5 percent of commercial intent prompts pull real-time search results. People are actively using AI to find and choose local service providers today.

AI Visibility Is Much Harder Than Google Rankings

Here is the sobering reality. Achieving visibility in AI search is significantly harder than ranking on Google. According to a 2026 report by SOCi, achieving AI visibility is 3 to 30 times harder than ranking well in traditional local search. The inclusion rates vary widely across platforms — ChatGPT includes only 1.2 percent of local business locations in its recommendations, Perplexity includes 7.4 percent, and Gemini includes 11 percent. By comparison, brands appeared in Google’s local three-pack 35.9 percent of the time.

Even more concerning, fewer than half of the brands that rank well on Google are among the most visible in AI results. Strong Google Search and Maps performance does not automatically translate to strong AI visibility. This means that even if your local SEO is solid on Google, you may be completely invisible to the growing number of consumers who use AI tools to make purchasing decisions.

Strong Multi-Platform Presence. AI tools pull data from multiple sources, not just your website. Businesses with complete and consistent profiles on platforms like Yelp, Trustpilot, G2, Bing Places, Apple Maps, and Facebook have three times higher chances of being cited by AI assistants, according to the Previsible study. Most local businesses have claimed their Google Business Profile but have neglected these other platforms. That is a missed opportunity.

Brand Mentions Across the Web. Domains with significant brand mentions on platforms like Reddit and Quora have roughly four times higher chances of being cited by AI tools. Large language models look for patterns of authority and trust across the web. If your business is only mentioned on your website, AI has very little to go on when deciding whether to recommend you.

Reviews and Reputation. AI recommendations consistently favor businesses with strong sentiment. Locations recommended by AI assistants average 4.3 stars across review platforms. Consistently asking happy customers for reviews on Google, Yelp, and industry-specific platforms directly impacts your AI visibility.

Structured Data and Machine-Readable Content. Implementing JSON-LD schema markup — Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQ schemas — tells AI exactly who you are, what you do, and where you operate. AI systems care deeply about how easily they can parse and understand your data. If your site is not structured for machine readability, AI crawlers may skip your content entirely.

Answer-Focused Content. People do not type short keywords into AI assistants. They ask full conversational questions. Your website needs content that directly answers real-world questions your customers ask — about cost, process, comparisons, timelines, and service areas. The Previsible study found that 44.2 percent of all LLM citations come from the first 30 percent of an article’s text, meaning your introductions and opening paragraphs matter more than ever.

NAP Consistency. AI models look for patterns and consistency. If your business name, address, phone number, services, or messaging are inconsistent across platforms, that sends mixed signals. AI assistants currently show business information that is only 68 percent accurate, so maintaining clean, consistent data across every listing and directory is critical.

What Businesses Should Do Right Now

The local SEO AI search landscape is evolving rapidly, but the businesses that act now will have a significant first-mover advantage. Here is a practical starting point.

First, audit your presence beyond Google. Check your profiles on Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook, and any industry-specific directories. Make sure every listing is complete, accurate, and consistent.

Second, implement structured data on your website. At a minimum, add the LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQ schemas to your key pages.

Third, build your reputation across multiple platforms. Actively generate reviews on Google, Yelp, and any relevant review sites. AI favors businesses with strong, consistent positive sentiment.

Fourth, create content that directly answers questions. Think about what your customers actually ask before hiring you, and publish clear, detailed answers on your website. Front-load the most important information in your opening paragraphs.

Fifth, build brand mentions on third-party platforms. Participate in relevant discussions on Reddit, Quora, and industry forums. Publish guest content. Get mentioned by local news outlets and business directories. Every credible mention increases your chances of being cited by AI.

The Bottom Line

Google is not going away. Traditional local SEO still matters and will continue to drive leads for years to come. But the data is clear — a growing majority of consumers are turning to AI tools to find and choose local businesses, and the gap between AI visibility and Google visibility is real.

The businesses that start optimizing for local SEO AI search now will be the ones AI recommends tomorrow. Those who wait will wonder why their phone stopped ringing.
